The road well traveled

God had answered my prayer: I had my dream job — on the staff of The Commission, the International Mission Board’s groundbreaking photojournalism magazine. In my heart I knew that God had placed me there. Yet, after five exceptional years, I was laid off in the wake of a bad economy. If God had called me there, was He saying goodbye?

It would take many years and many tears before I would understand that God wasn’t kicking me out. He needed to teach me some things other than just how to make photos. The lessons are never that direct. But God is patient. He has more time than we think we do.

It’s all about me, or is it?

Then your heart will become proud and you will forget the LORD your God, Who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. He led you through the vast and dreadful desert, that thirsty and waterless land, with its venomous snakes and scorpions. He brought you water out of hard rock. He gave you manna to eat in the desert, something your fathers had never known, to humble and to test you so that in the end it might go well with you. You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” But remember the LORD your God, for it is He who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms His covenant, which He swore to your forefathers, as it is today.

A look inside

“My friends, you must do all you can to show that God has really chosen and selected you. If you keep on doing this, you won’t stumble and fall.” – 2 Peter 1:10 (CEV)

The portfolio review is one of the tensest times for most photographers. Most every person we show our work to is someone we would like to work with, and therefore anything less than “I would like to use you” is disappointing. We are exposing our soul for review.
